A survey of over three thousand high school girls across fourteen schools found that the top reasons girls play sports are enjoyment and fun, health and fitness, competition, and team connection. Friendship and belonging appear again and again, showing that girls want to be part of a supportive community where they feel included and valued. Freshmen often join to make friends while seniors look for meaning and to leave a legacy, showing that motivation evolves as students grow.

At the same time, the survey shows why girls sometimes step away from sports. Lack of confidence, intimidating environments, and the absence of female role models are major barriers. More than a thousand responses noted low confidence or lack of encouragement as a reason not to participate, nearly five hundred mentioned unwelcoming or exclusive team environments, and over two hundred cited the lack of female leaders. Many girls do not quit because they cannot compete they quit when the culture does not make them feel supported or included.

The good news is clear. Girls will join, stay, and thrive when the right environment exists. Friendship and social connection are the number one motivators, followed by positive coaching, flexible schedules, invitations to try the sport, and beginner-friendly programs. A welcoming, fun atmosphere is even more important than competition. When girls see older teammates or program leaders succeed while supporting others, it builds confidence, reduces fear, and shows them that they belong.
